If you haven’t switched your energy supplier at home in 3 years, you just got very popular!

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed that anyone who has been on a standard tariff for three years or more will have their details put on a central database.

Once on the database, the other 36 suppliers in the UK energy market can then pitch for their custom, by sending letters proposing a ‘cheaper alternative.’

Rhys Boven, Managing Director of Switched On Energy, said: “This is just going to cause more frustration and confusion for customers. The residential energy market is already complicated, with many different tariffs available with different rates, terms and benefits.

Like the seen in Harry Potter, customers are just going to get bombarded with sales letters, pleading they are the best advice for them. Sharing customer data in the hope that the least engaged customers, stuck on the most expensive tariffs, will switch is not what I would immediately think of doing. I think the answer would be to survey these customers who haven’t switched in 3 or more years, and see what’s the primary reason. I’m confident that a lot would express their disliking to the ‘big six’ and giving their personal data to an ‘army’ of suppliers, is not going to help.
